Morocco earthquake leaves many in dire need of help

A few days ago, 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit Moroccan’s Marrakech-Safi region, causing a devastating effect to residents and their families.

It was the biggest earthquake we’ve experienced in the country since 2004 Al Hoceima earthquake, with the death toll of over 600.

I received the news as soon as I spotted the message in our family group chat on the late Friday night of the 8th of September.

My sister, who lives in Rabat, asked if the rest of us had felt the earthquake. My brother, who resides in Taroudant, a city near the epicenter, then described how the building shook, prompting him and his family to evacuate.

They spent the entire night outside, fearing another tremor. During this time, we were reaching out to family and friends to ensure their safety. The true gravity of the situation didn’t become apparent to us until the following day.

إن للّه و إنا إليه راجعون

As I’m writing this, the grim reality is that the death toll has surpassed the 2,000 mark, and tragically, it is anticipated to climb even higher.

Many have lost their children, parents, spouses, neighbours, friends… We ask Allah to shower our brothers and sisters that passed with abundance of mercy, and to bring comfort and ease to the ones left behind.

The devastation caused by the earthquake extends beyond loss of life. Numerous individuals have seen their homes reduced to rubble, many displaced, and many are left in critical conditions.

People across the region are still awaiting rescue. Children can be heard asking for help underneath the ruins, and aid is slow for people effected in rural areas.

The roads to the mountains are trecherous and some major roads are blocked by debris and rubbles casued by the earthquake.

You can extend help to those affected by the earthquake

It is at this time, that we’re advised to show mercy and compassion to the poor and needy, as narrated from our beloved Prophet (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam):

ارْحَمُوا تُرْحَمُوا

“Show mercy and you will be shown mercy.” (Ahmad, no. 6255)

If you’re able to, and would like to seek Allah’s reward by extending help to those who are effected by the earthquake in Morocco, you can donate charity directly to Umm Yusuf.

She’s my dear friend’s mother and lives in Chichaoua near Marrakech, a city nearest to the epicenter of the earthquake.

Although Umm Yusuf and her family felt the earthquake, which was really strong, they are unharmed, alhamdulillah.

She’s a reliable sister we know from Birmingham. She has been helping orphans and those who are in need in Morocco since I came to know her under Association Baitouna, a charity effort she founded.

She’ll give the aid you send directly to those who need it, insha’Allah. If you have any questions, you can contact her directly here.

Donate to the needy in Amizmiz

Here’s another local charity my friend in Tangier donates to based in Amizmiz, :

Weʼre raising £60,000 to Send immediate aid to families following Earthquake in Morocco

Amizmiz is a small town located approximately 55 km from Marrakech. It lies at the foot of the high Atlas mountains and was greatly effected by the earthquake.

Beware of emerging scammers taking advantage of the earthquake

Sadly, many that are not in need are going to take this opportunity to get some extra cash. I’m not surprised, to be honest.

What has surprised me, though, is that it involves a family acquaintance. Someone we know from Northern Morocco was caught seeking aid to our UK friends, falsely claiming to have been affected by the earthquake.

At first we assumed maybe his family was effected. It turns out that his family was in unaffected city. Soon came to discover, he has a bad reputation for doing this.

Rather than taking this as an opportunity to reflect and return to Allah, it’s beyond me how anyone can see this as an opportunity to scam people for money that is supposed to go to the people who really need it.

Please be careful, brothers and sisters.

A Powerful Reminders For Muslims

Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah be merciful to him) said:

“Allah (Glorified be He) may sometimes permit the earth to breathe. Great earthquakes happen due to this breath. These earthquakes may cause people to fear Allah (Exalted be He), repent to Him, supplicate to Him, forsake sins and regret what they have done. Some of the Salaf (righteous predecessors) said when the earth was shaken: your Lord admonishes you.

‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a speech to admonish people when an earthquake happened in Al-Madinah and said: “If this happens again, I will not live among you in Madinah.”

The Prophet (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) said:

“This nation of mine is a nation that is shown mercy. There will be no punishment for them in the Hereafter—instead their punishment in this world will be trials, earthquakes and being killed.” (Al-Albānī declared this hadīth to be authentic saying, ‘It was reported by Abu Dāwūd (4278), Al-Hākim (4/444), Ahmad (4/410,418) from the route of Al-Masʿūdī from Saʿīd Ibn Abī Burdah from his father from Abu Mūsā…

Al-Hākim said, ‘It has a sahīh chain of narration.’ Adh-Dhahabī agreed. Ibn Hajr said, ‘Its chain of narration is hasan.’ See as-Sahīhah, no. 959) Meaning, that there are some from this ummah who are tried and punished in this world, and therefore, their punishment in the Hereafter is mitigated or removed altogether—and that is from the great Mercy of Allah that He bestows upon whom He wills.

The Messenger of Allah (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) said:

الْمُسْلِمُ أَخُو الْمُسْلِمِ لاَ يَظْلِمُهُ وَلاَ يُسْلِمُه وَمَنْ كَانَ فِي حَاجَةِ أَخِيهِ كَانَ اللَّهُ فِي حَاجَتِهِ

“A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim, he does not oppress him, he does not hand him over (to an oppressor) and Whoever fulfils the needs of his brother, then Allah will fulfil his needs.” (Bukhāri, no. 6951)

The Prophet (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) said:

“The Hour will not be established until knowledge will be taken away, earthquakes become frequent, time will pass quickly, afflictions will appear, murders will increase, and money will overflow amongst you.” (Bukhāri, no. 1036)
